Hezbollah Threatens Cyprus For Assisting Israel

Lebanese government officials worked Thursday to maintain friendly relations with Cyprus. Cyprus has harbored anti-Americanism over lingering frustration that the US quietly backed Turkey's 1974 invasion and its continued military presence in the north.

Hezbollah's leader says it will fight without limits if Israel attacks and that nowhere in Israel would be safe. The head of Lebanon's Hezbollah said on Wednesday that nowhere in Israel would be safe if a full-scale war erupted between the two sides.

The comments by Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah come as tensions rise in the region following an Israeli airstrike on a building in the Gaza Strip that killed at least 10 people, including a senior commander of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group.

Nasrallah said that Hezbollah would not stand idly by if Israel launched a war against Lebanon. "If Israel wants a war, we are ready for it," he said. "We will fight without limits and we will not allow Israel to achieve its goals." Nasrallah also warned that Hezbollah would target Israeli cities and towns if Israel attacked Lebanon.
"Nowhere in Israel will be safe if a war breaks out," he said. "We will hit all of Israel's cities and towns with our missiles."

The European Union member state closest to the Middle East, Cyprus was caught off guard by comments from Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah that the group would retaliate against Cyprus if it continued to support Israel.
