A Profile of Pennsylvania's New Leader

WEB Joshua David Shapiro (born June 20, 1973) is an American lawyer and politician who has served as the 48th Governor of Pennsylvania since 2023. A moderate Democrat, Shapiro was elected Governor in 2022 and assumed office in January 2023.

Early Life and Education

Shapiro was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and raised in Montgomery County. He graduated from the University of Rochester and Harvard Law School. After graduating, Shapiro worked as an attorney in private practice before entering politics.

Political Career

Shapiro's political career began in 2005 when he was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He served in the House until 2011, when he was elected to the Pennsylvania Senate. Shapiro served as a State Senator until 2017 when he was elected Attorney General of Pennsylvania.

Governorship

In 2022, Shapiro ran for Governor of Pennsylvania as a moderate Democrat. He defeated Republican candidate Doug Mastriano in the general election. Shapiro was sworn in as Governor on January 17, 2023. As Governor, Shapiro has focused on education, healthcare, and economic development.

Personal Life

Shapiro is married to Lori Shapiro, and they have four children. The family resides in the Governor's Mansion in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
